Folks ask me what type of schooling we are doing all the time. When I tell them homeschooling/unschooling they automatically cringe at the idea of spending that much time with their children. They also have this preconceived idea of what that homeschooling looks like, which is generally not even close to the truth.
At one point someone asked, "Well how are you preparing them(my children) for the world? ". I thought for a long while about that. The question, "Is raising them up in the comfort and care of our home stifling their development and ability to cope with the world?" circling around in my mind, making me doubt all of this work our village is doing to support them. My worry was, "Is it all for nothing?".
My children are all so different and at different stages of their own developmental expression and growth- and at that point(and even now) I cannot really see them having all of their exploratory needs met in a "traditional" school environment. I thought about how much we would miss just being together and talking through the hard moments or cuddling up when we need a minute to reset. I thought about the sacredness of caregiving and the inherent value in being emotionally, physically and spiritually available to pour into them when they needed it. I also thought about my children and their safety-body and mind at the hands of this broken system. And SNAP, I'm out of the spin and at peace- knowing I know best for my babies...
The truth is we all get caught up in those what if moments- whether our kids are in "traditional"schools or learning radically on their own- "Am I doing the right thing?".
There will always be those moments our egos arise and challenge our choices thus far. That is actually a good thing. That's our internal system making us tune up and attune to our authentic purpose(s)! As I chewed on the question more- I realized just how happy my children were and how much they were learning inherently and from their own interests. We were out at the park or roaming every day of the week and trusting ourselves to know what the next adventure or goal was. That is our homeschooling. Learning through living and living through learning. Three children later I can appreciate those moments and my ability to approach them with wisdom because they help me to remember and rebalance into a place of gratitude. WE ARE GRATEFUL TO BE EXPLORING LIFE TOGETHER!
I came to realize just how beautiful our choice to homeschool/unschool is (and how lucky we are to have this choice).
My children get to wake up and explore all of who they are, unashamed and unshamed by what that might manifest to be. They get to express their inner most needs and change- transition at their own pace into new or unfinished ideas. What's more is that we, as their village, get to lift them up and help them grow through the context of their needs- not our needs for them to perform. This allows a certain amount of trust in our relationship that we continue to cherish and build on. When I see how happy they are at certain points, I just revel in the beauty. The ebb and flow is part of the journey. The low points make the highs that much sweeter and so --
My response to this question: How are you preparing them for the world?
Well then I must show them the world- and show them the ARE the world. The worldschoolers in us roared like mighty lions. Being able to live in a different place with different culture, history, language and more has been the deepest and truest education we could ask for. Our teachers are intentional, vibrationally compatible masters of their crafts. They teach our babies while lifting them up, speaking wisdom into them and helping them curate their confidence. As parents we are guides, focusing on how to help our children answer the questions they have and we have the unique opportunity to support them through their emotional growth on a deep level. It is a great time to be a worldschooling/unschooling mama-LET ME TELL YOU.
As we float and flow, we see that our community deserves and needs these opportunities. So now we- not only venture around as a multigenerational, Black/Indigenous Diasporic family- but we are building opportunities for other families like ours to do that as well, in a way that is unique and special to their needs and experiences...what a paradigm shift-what a deep purpose. On top of that we are passionate about sharing wisdom on world schooling, cultural expressions, sustainable life practices as per our unique traditions and so much more! We are on the journey to making this available for our community in a number of ways-including online- ANYWHERE. It is a vibrant time to be alive and floating through this purpose and we are grateful to have you as part of our village!
Transcendent Descendants LLC is the next step to making this happen for our community. So stay tuned to find out more about what that is and how it is supporting this paradigm shift. I cannot wait for you to be part of it!
